Call For Proposals
From XPDay
XP Day 6
More than XP. More than one day
XP Day 6 is a two day international conference about Agile Software Development for software developers, project leaders, IT managers, testers, architects, and coaches. We encourage session proposals from experienced practitioners of agile software development methods, such as Adaptive, Crystal, DSDM, Feature-Driven Development, Lean, Scrum and Extreme Programming (XP). The conference provides a good opportunity for exchanging ideas and sharing experiences, and is suited both for experienced practitioners and those wanting an introduction Agile Software Development. The focus of this conference is on practical knowledge, real-world experience and active participation of all attendees.
XP Day 6 will take place on 27th and 28th November, 2006 in London, U.K. More information can be found at /.
XP Day 6 is organised by the eXtreme Tuesday Club, a non-profit organisation that publicises and shares knowledge about agile software development practices.
Sessions
Why Organise a Session?
Organising a session is the best way to learn from the conference. It provides an opportunity to share your experiences, to get feedback on your ideas, try new session formats. It's your opportunity to shape the conference to your interests. Session organisers will get free admission to the conference.
Format
We believe that the best way to learn is through hands-on experience, and therefore encourage sessions that involve interaction and audience participation. We are also looking for some real life experiences (both good and bad) of applying agile techniques. Successful sessions from previous years have been tutorials, workshops, simulations and games. Sessions will be organised into four tracks over two days. A session may be 1, 2 or 3 hours in duration.
A session can address a topic that involves any stakeholder or aspect of agile development. E.g. customers; business users; analysts; managers; developers; deployment; support; recruitment. We are looking for sessions that draw on real-life experience, with ideas that can be applied in the everyday business of software development. The broad areas we would like to cover are:
- Introduction to Agile Development
- Experience reports from different areas (software houses, financial institutions, bespoke development, product development), both successes and failures.
- Technical topics
- People and process
Other possible session topics include, but are not limited to: contracts for agile software projects; continuous process improvement; transitioning to an agile process; the economics of agile software development; techniques to improve pairing; scaling agile development processes; agile free software and open source projects; developing mission critical software; agile project management; tools and techniques. Above all we are looking for new sessions with fresh ideas. If you've never presented a session before, or have had an idea for a session in the back of your mind for a while, write it up and submit it to XP Day 6.
If you'd like some advice before submitting, please feel free to contact the programme chairs at [email protected]
Posters
Why Present a Poster?
Posters are a lightweight way to attract the attention of conference attendees. A poster can present a work in progress, some recent thinking or even invite answers to a question. Suitable topics for posters include: a new technique you've found; a new application of an old technique; lessons you learned on your most recent project; a tool you have been developing; a question you would like answered by the audience; a survey for the audience to complete; a disruptive idea you think will challenge the audience's preconceptions.
Format
Use a mix of any or all of...
- T-Shirts: Wear your poster on your back during the conference to break the ice and start conversations. We will arrange printing the poster onto the shirt.
- Interactive Posters: Design a poster that the audience will contribute to. We will hang a marker pen beside the poster to allow anybody to fill in the gaps.
- Coffee Talk: Stand beside your poster during coffee breaks to discuss it with passers by.
- Something Else: Surprise us with an innovative idea for a poster format
Posters will be put up on large boards, about the size of three flip-charts next to each other, so you will need to think about how to layout and print your material.
How to Submit
Proposals should be submitted before the submission deadline by creating a page on the XP Day wiki (/wiki). In all proposals include these details:
- Title
- Organiser(s), including a short biography (100 words max.) and contact information (e-mail address and phone number) for the principal organiser.
For a session proposal, the following information is required (you may provide more information if you feel that's appropriate):
- Session duration (60, 120, or 180 minutes)
- Session type: simulation; game; workshop; interactive presentation;case study; interactive demonstration; goldfish bowl; panel discussion; clinic; other.
- Session description: objectives, contents, process, timetable, benefits of attending, the way in which the audience is involved
- Intended audience (e.g. customers, managers, developers, testers) and their experience level (e.g. apprentice, journeyman, master)
- What will participants learn? Will the session produce any outputs to be displayed for the rest of the conference?
For a poster proposal, write a short paragraph describing what your poster will be about, perhaps including illustrations if appropriate.
Submission Review and Acceptance Process
The submission and acceptance process for sessions and posters consists of 6 phases:
- Submission
- Review
- Acceptance
- Re-working of conditionally accepted proposals
- Shepherding
- Submission of final materials.
Proposals that meet the minimal criteria for submission will be considered for acceptance. Each submission will be openly reviewed by the programme committee and other presenters. Reviews and feedback will be written on the XP Day Wiki (See How to Review Submissions).
Note: by submitting a proposal, you agree to review proposals from presenters who are not involved in your own presentations.
Sessions will be accepted, rejected, or conditionally accepted by the Programme Committee based on the reviews and programme constraints such as available time slots and whether a session can fit into the required streams.
Sessions are conditionally accepted if the program committee thinks the session is of interest for the conference, but needs some (re)work. The criteria for acceptance will be explicitly stated and through assistance of a program committee member, the organisers will get a chance to work on the proposal. After conditional acceptance, the program committee will decide on final acceptance or rejection.
When a session proposal has been accepted, it will enter the shepherding process. One of the programme comittee will become your shepherd and will help you to further refine and improve the session. After that, organisers can submit materials if the session requires it.
Review Criteria
- Sessions and posters must be relevant to agile software development and agile business processes.
- We want to create a program that provides material ranging from introductory to advanced, and we will balance the topics accordingly.
- We are open to submissions from experienced presenters as well as novices.
- We do not accept sponsored or purely commercial sessions or posters
- We prefer sessions organized by co-presenters. Posters can be presented by one person.
- Presenters may submit more than one session and/or poster.
